Land, sea and light

As a designer and maker of fine furniture the natural world has always been my inspiration. What fascinates me is to look for the essence of shapes that I find in the landscape and to use those simplified forms as the basis for design.

Land, sea and light takes that a significant step further by basing an entire collection of furniture on a single landscape; the cliffs and beaches of the St Davids peninsula. The pieces will be made from Welsh timber and each inspired by a specific place along the coast. It is, as far as I know, a unique project.

To support Land, sea and light I am looking for a small number of patrons; people who are excited by the project and who see the importance of keeping alive fine craftsmanship and design. If you are interested on behalf of yourself or an organization in discussing this further I would be delighted to hear from you.

Thank you.

Below you can see how the designs are progressing and how they evolve from the landscape shapes.

This design for a sideboard with sliding doors comes from the vertical plates of rock on Porthmelgan beach.

Those rock plates just ask to be slid aside to reveal what lies inside. With the sideboard you will be able to do just that.

The Elements

console table will, in the true meaning of the word “console”, be supported by the wall. The rising curve of the rock strata, recreated in laminated oak, separates the planes of sea and sky – in this case represented by shelves of patinated bronze and glass. You can see its inspiration in that openning image of the view out to Ramsey island.

This is my Sea Chest. The waves approach in sculpted relief up the front face of the chest and break over the top surface between dark rounded cliffs. The inspiration was the bay at Porth y Ffynnon.

More to follow as the designs develop.
