About Grant Sonnex

My workshop is at the heart of Wotton-under-Edge, an old market town tucked into a bowl of hills and looking out over the Severn vale to the Forest of Dean and the Black Mountains.

This is the landscape where I have lived for almost 20 years and where I find much of my inspiration.  Even on the walk to work I’ll catch sight of something –  the sunlight on coppiced Hazel or fallen leaves on the stream – and start wondering how these shapes might find their way into a chair or table.  And when I get to the workshop it’s that combination of inspiration and imagination with the unrushed care of craftsmanship that I enjoy so much.

The BBC years were fascinating and full of wonderful experiences, but they left unexpressed a more earthy need to make real, physical, beautiful things.  So I’m delighted that I now get to spend my days in the workshop with my drawing board, wood, tools and furniture.
